I did what you said, CB, and I'm still seeing the Halloween avatar.
I even tried a different Thanksgiving avatar and the Halloween avatar is still showing up.

Can you see it now? I deactivate your option for an avatar on my board, then activated it again and I see the turkey now. Do you? Edited to say I haven't a clue why that worked (if it did)

Hmmm... try holding down your control key and hitting F5. Maybe it's in your cache and that will hopefully clear it out. Unless it's in my cache, ha!

AE, apparently, I have caused everyone's cached to stick, so-to-speak.
Press the Control key and the F5 key, at the same time, and it will clear your cache.
