Hi All,
I am posting this because I hope Ms. Burnett, or someone affiliated reads this. I'm sure most of you know that Ms. Burnett successfully sued
the National Enquirer for libel in the early 80's. What many of you probably don't know, is that she used a portion of the judgement to create
an endowment through the University of Hawaii for journalism students. That is where my story will begin.
*** Warning and Disclaimer- This story touches on politics, and I'm not trying to start anything or offend anyone.***** The other day, I got a REALLY trashy email from a friend of mine attacking George Soros. The email used EXTENSIVE editing of transcripts
of interviews with Mr. Soros to try besmirch his name. To be specific, it attempted to portray Mr. Soros (a Jew who survived the Holocaust)
as a Nazi collaborator, and to paint him as some type of "Dr. Evil". It was one of the most vile, and false emails I have ever received. The edits
to the transcripts were OBVIOUSLY intentionally cut up to create a false impression.
The "article" is called "Soros: Republic Enemy #1" and can be viewed at the link below (though I received it in an email):

What the author of this slimy hit piece was doing was the same thing that the National Enquirer attempted to do to Ms. Burnett.
Imagine my surprise then, when I got to the bottom of this scoundrel's "article" ( his name is Jim O'Neil) and read the following about the author: "In 1998 while attending the University of South Florida as a journalism student, O'Neill won "First Place" in the "Carol Burnett/University of Hawaii AEJMC Research in Journalism Ethics Award. The annual contest was set up by Carol Burnett with the money she won from successfully suing the National Enquirer for libel." I am having a hard time believing this guy received this award, and contacted it's administrator at the University of Hawaii earlier today. He told me that all their records of who won this prize pre-2000 have been lost. What I'm looking for is someone who can give me a definitive answer if someone named Jim O'Neill won this prize in 1998 while attending the University of South Florida. I would also like Ms. Burnett to know that this individual is using her name to attempt to promote himself in a way I KNOW she would disapprove of in the strongest possible terms. I hope somebody can help. If so, feel free to contact me via email at chughes1614 at yahoo dot com.
Thank you and have a great weekend.
